Hurricane Matthew Preparedness Guide

With Hurricane Matthew quickly approaching the Southeast region of the U.S., BroadbandSearch wants to make sure you have all of the information you need to feel prepared. A state of emergency has been declared for all of Florida and the coastal areas of Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina. First and foremost, if your local government places you in an evacuation zone it is in your best interest to identify the safest route and leave at least 24 hours in advance. If you are in area that is away from the dangers of either storm surge or high winds it is important to keep a hurricane preparedness kit.

Basic items to keep on hand include:

  • Plenty of water
  • Non-perishable food for your family and pets
  • Batteries
  • Flashlights
  • Candles
  • Battery powered radio
  • List of emergency contact numbers
  • Secure any important documents (photo ID, insurance numbers, etc.)
  • A generator if the power is expected to be out for an extended period

If you are in an area that is prone to flooding make sure all drains and gutters are cleared prior to the storm. Please be advised that along with strong winds and rain, hurricanes often produce tornados. In the event of a tornado, seek shelter immediately in an area that is away from windows and loose objects. Expect your power to be out for at least 24 hours after a hurricane. If your internet service goes down please call your service provider for all up-to-date information.
