Connect2Compete: Mediacom’s Low Income Internet Program

The digital divide in the United States has left approximately 24% of the student population without access to reliable internet. In fact, a recent report shows that 12 million students across the country are currently disconnected from the digital world, putting them at a significant disadvantage in their education. To address this concern, the government has partnered with Internet Service Providers (ISPs) through the Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP). This program aims to provide affordable high-speed internet to low-income households, ensuring that all students have the necessary tools to succeed in school.

As a result of the ACP, ISPs have launched their own low-cost internet programs, one of which is Connect2Compete by Mediacom. This program is designed to provide affordable internet access, free modems, and Wi-Fi service to families in need. With Connect2Compete, Mediacom is making a positive impact on low-income families, giving them access to the necessary tools to stay connected and access essential educational and economic opportunities. In this article, we will discuss the benefits of Mediacom's Connect2Compete program and how it is empowering families by providing them with affordable internet access.

What is Mediacom's Connect2Compete Low-Income Internet Program?

Mediacom's Connect2Compete Low Income Internet Program is a response to the increasing need for affordable and reliable internet connectivity among low-income households, particularly those with K-12 students. The program was established as part of the Federal Communications Commission's (FCC) Affordable Connectivity program and is in partnership with the non-profit initiative called "EveryoneOn."

With the recent COVID-19 pandemic, it has been highlighted that the need for internet connectivity has grown more crucial as schools across the country have shifted to online learning. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, around 93% of households with school-aged children reported some form of distance learning during the pandemic. This has resulted in a surge in demand for affordable and reliable internet services, particularly among low-income families.

As a response to this growing demand, Mediacom's Connect2Compete program has played a crucial role in providing low-cost internet services to eligible households. In fact, during the pandemic, Mediacom announced additional initiatives to support the program and expand access to financially challenged families. These initiatives included free access to Mediacom's Wi-Fi hotspots, waiving late fees, and suspending disconnections due to non-payment. Mediacom's efforts have made a significant impact on low-income families by providing them with the necessary tools to stay connected and gain reliable internet access.

Features Included in the Program

Mediacom understands the importance of internet access and has designed its low-income internet program to cater to the unique needs of financially struggling Americans. The program provides several features to help families stay connected and thrive in the digital world.

High-Speed Internet

Mediacom's Low Income Internet Program provides two plans with different internet speeds to meet the needs of low-income households. The Connect2Compete plan provides speeds of up to 25 Mbps, which is more than enough for most activities online, while the Connect2Compete Plus plan offers faster speeds of up to 100 Mbps, allowing users to stream higher quality videos and experience smoother online gameplay.

No Contracts

Mediacom's Connect2Compete program provides customers with the freedom to choose internet services that suit their needs, without being locked into long-term commitments, thanks to its no-contract policy. This is especially beneficial for those who may experience changes in their financial situation, as they can easily modify or cancel their plan to meet their needs.

No Data Caps

With Mediacom's Connect2Compete program, subscribers can now access the internet without any limitations as data caps are eliminated. This means families can browse, research, play online games, work, and stream without the added worry of throttling or extra charges.

No Installation Fees

While Mediacom's regular internet plans require a one-time installation fee of $109.99, Connect2Compete has no installation fees, resulting in a substantial amount of savings for qualifying households. Additionally, there are no activation fees for the program, making it an even more affordable option for financially troubled families.

No Equipment Rental Fees

Mediacom's Low Income Internet Program waives equipment rental fees to ensure that low-income households can get connected to the internet without any additional financial burden, such as the potential cumulative cost of equipment rental fees, making the service more accessible and affordable.

How Much Does It Cost?

Mediacom offers two different program options for its Connect2Compete program to provide flexibility for families with varying internet needs and budgets. The two options aim to address the unique needs of low-income families, with one providing basic internet access and the other offering higher-speed internet service.

Connect2Compete Broadband Internet

  • Price: $9.95/month + tax
  • Speed: Up to 25 Mbps

This special educational price requires no up-front deposit or equipment rental fees. The monthly fee applies to a single outlet and basic modem. If a household requires custom installation, additional outlets, or other Mediacom services and service appointments, additional charges may apply.

Connect2Compete Plus

  • Price: $30/month + tax
  • Speed: Up to 100 Mbps

The Connect2Compete Plus program is a great option for families who need higher internet speeds, and with the ACP program, it can even be essentially free. The Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP) aims to provide eligible low-income households with monthly credits to cover the costs of the Connect2Compete Plus plan.

To be eligible for the Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP), households must participate in certain federal assistance programs such as the National School Lunch Program, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), or Medicaid.

Both plans include free professional installation and Wi-Fi, ensuring that families can stay connected without having to worry about additional costs.

While the program aims to support eligible families, it is also worth noting that Mediacom has to ensure that its limited resources are reaching those who need it the most. Thus, requalification every two years is required to guarantee the program's maximum effectiveness and prevent any misuse of resources.

Requirements for Eligibility

To ensure that the Connect2Compete (C2C) program is directed towards the low-income households that need it, Mediacom has set specific eligibility requirements. These requirements include meeting a certain income threshold or qualifying for a government assistance program.

If Mediacom’s internet service is available in your area, you may apply for their C2C program considering at least one person in the household meets the following criteria:

  • You have at least one student in grades K-12 living at home. This program is specifically created to provide support for families with K-12 students who require access to the internet and other educational resources for remote learning. Its goal is to ensure that every student has the necessary tools to achieve success in their academic pursuits, regardless of their family's financial situation.
  • At least one child qualifies for free or reduced-price school lunch through the National School Lunch Program (NSLP). This requirement ensures that eligible families who may have limited access to internet services can receive educational resources to support their children's academic success. To qualify for free or reduced-price lunches through the NSLP, a student's household income must be at or below 130% of the federal poverty level. For reduced-price lunches, the household income must be between 130% and 185% of the federal poverty level. Other criteria, such as participation in certain government assistance programs, homelessness, and foster care, can also make a student eligible for free or reduced-price lunches.
  • You are not a current Mediacom internet customer and have not subscribed to their internet service in the past 90 days. The C2C program's mandates that only individuals who haven't subscribed to Mediacom's internet service within the last 90 days or are not currently using their internet services can apply. This prevents misuse and reserves resources for those in need.
  • You do not have an outstanding Mediacom bill or unreturned equipment. Ensuring that there is no past due balance or equipment returns is a crucial requirement for eligible families to receive uninterrupted services from Mediacom. This measure allows Mediacom to allocate its resources to eligible families, who require them the most, thereby making its services more efficient.
