Hughes Network Systems was founded in 1971 by Howard Hughes under the name Digital Communication Corporation. The company went through a series of mergers before officially becoming the independent company of HughesNet in 2006. In 2011, the company expanded significantly after being acquired by EchoStar. HughesNet is now the largest satellite internet provider in America, serving over 1 million customers.
HughesNet offers their customers satellite internet service. When you submit a page request, it is sent to a satellite that is approximately 22,000 miles in space. Next, the satellite notifies the Hughes Network Operations Center (NOC) that you are trying to access a specific page. The NOC then recognizes the request and sends a connection back through the satellite, to your modem, and the page is then loaded.
Customers can expect download speeds that range from 5 Mbps to 15 Mbps and upload speeds between 1 Mbps and 2 Mbps, depending on the plan selected. These speeds are recommended for internet browsing, checking emails, music streaming, video streaming and more. HughesNet does not recommend that you use satellite internet for VPNs, heavy downloading, and third-party VoiP services. These can take up a significant amount of bandwidth, so if you do use any of them make sure you checking your data usage with the status meter on your online dashboard.
HughesNet has plans with data caps that range from 5 GB/month to 50 GB/month. If a customer hits their data limit, they may experience slower speeds until the next month. In addition to the standard monthly data allowance, all plans also come with 50GB of Bonus Bytes between the non peak hours of 2am and 8am.
HughesNet has four options for plans and each one varies based on the speed and data provided. The prices range from $49.99/month to $129.99/month.
