HughesNet Information

What is HughesNet?

Hughes Network Systems was founded in 1971 by Howard Hughes under the name Digital Communication Corporation. The company went through a series of mergers before officially becoming the independent company of HughesNet in 2006. In 2011, the company expanded significantly after being acquired by EchoStar. HughesNet is now the largest satellite internet provider in America, serving over 1 million customers.

What type of internet service is HughesNet?

HughesNet offers their customers satellite internet service. When you submit a page request, it is sent to a satellite that is approximately 22,000 miles in space. Next, the satellite notifies the Hughes Network Operations Center (NOC) that you are trying to access a specific page. The NOC then recognizes the request and sends a connection back through the satellite, to your modem, and the page is then loaded.

How fast is HughesNet?

Customers can expect download speeds that range from 5 Mbps to 15 Mbps and upload speeds between 1 Mbps and 2 Mbps, depending on the plan selected. These speeds are recommended for internet browsing, checking emails, music streaming, video streaming and more. HughesNet does not recommend that you use satellite internet for VPNs, heavy downloading, and third-party VoiP services. These can take up a significant amount of bandwidth, so if you do use any of them make sure you checking your data usage with the status meter on your online dashboard.

How much data do I get with HughesNet?

HughesNet has plans with data caps that range from 5 GB/month to 50 GB/month. If a customer hits their data limit, they may experience slower speeds until the next month. In addition to the standard monthly data allowance, all plans also come with 50GB of Bonus Bytes between the non peak hours of 2am and 8am.

How much does HughesNet cost?

HughesNet has four options for plans and each one varies based on the speed and data provided. The prices range from $49.99/month to $129.99/month.

What Hardware do I need with HughesNet?

HughesNet provides the following with their professional installation:

  • Satellite modem with a LAN cable to connect to your computer
  • HughesNet satellite dish, mount, and radio
  • 125 feet of RG-6 cable that runs from the dish to your computer (*small penetrations made to exterior walls will be weather-sealed)
  • Grounding block which is grounded to an NEC-approved spot

Why should I pick HughesNet over the competition?

HughesNet has been in the satellite internet business for more than 40 years, longer than any other satellite provider. Since then they have invested $1 billion in improving their systems and coverage areas. In their 2015 annual report, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) named HughesNet number one among all major internet providers for delivering advertised speeds.

HughesNet Rankings
HughesNet is a satellite internet provider serving the continental U.S., Hawaii, parts of Alaska and Canada. HughesNet has been working with satellite technology for over 40 years and has spent over a billion dollars developing a satellite internet service that will meet the needs of its customers. Its long experience has earned it recognition by the FCC for delivering on promised internet speeds. They have a 24-hour customer support department that ensures a wait time under 5 minutes. Prices may seem a little high when compared to prices in more competitive markets but are comparable to other rural internet providers. Service activation is more difficult than average because it requires the professional installation of a satellite.
