Know Your Gateway Before You Pull the Plug
The sticker on the back or bottom will show the model number and the default credentials. Different models and generations will have different lighting signals and reset steps.
- XB7, XB8, XB9, XB10: the current single-LED generation. The XB10 is the Wi-Fi 7 flagship; the XB8 runs Wi-Fi 6E, the XB7 Wi-Fi 6. All four report status through one multicolor indicator on the front.
- XB3 and XB6: older hardware. The XB6 tops out at Wi-Fi 5, and legacy units may use multiple labeled LEDs where green rather than white signals a healthy connection.
- A Gateway is a combo unit. Cable modem and Wi-Fi router in one chassis, which is why rebooting it takes down both the internet connection and the wireless network at once.
Storm-Ready Wi-Fi Does Not Keep Your Gateway Alive
Storm-Ready Wi-Fi is a standalone extender with its own rechargeable battery and an LTE radio. When power or the cable line drops, it keeps your wireless network reachable by failing over to cellular for up to four hours. It does not feed power to the gateway.
The device has its own reset control on the back of the battery unit, and Xfinity's guidance for a Storm-Ready device that will not settle is to reboot the gateway first and re-run setup, resetting the Storm-Ready only if that fails.
Method 1: Pull the Power
No app, no login, no working connection needed. This method is the one to reach for first, and the one to fall back on when the other two do not work.
- Unplug the power cord at the wall outlet rather than at the gateway. Loose barrel connectors on the device end sometimes fail to break the circuit cleanly.
- Count 60 seconds. Thirty is usually sufficient, but a full minute guarantees the volatile memory has cleared and costs you nothing.

The orange states deserve a second look because they're often confused. They both mean the gateway is mid-process and just require a little patience from you. The difference is what they are busy with: steady orange is usually a firmware install, and blinking orange is a connection attempt that has not landed. When a Reboot Takes Too Long
Five to ten minutes covers a typical reboot across every current model. A firmware update can take up to 15 minutes. If it takes more than 20 minutes with no steady white, there is likely something upstream or internal that needs attention and is worth engaging support.
Method 2: The Xfinity App
The Xfinity App is a great way to reboot your gateway if it's not easily accessible, like in the basement, a wiring closet, or behind a wall of media gear. If your connection is down, you will need cellular data or another connection to do this.
- Open the Xfinity app and sign in with your Xfinity ID.
- Go to WiFi, then View WiFi equipment.
- Choose your gateway, then Restart, and confirm.
- Wait out the same 5-to-10-minute window. The app flips the device back to online status when it is through.
There may be a Gateway Restart card on the Overview tab. Labels shift between releases, so look for the word Restart under your internet equipment if it's not on the Overview tab.
Method 3: The Admin Tool at 10.0.0.1
Best when you are already at a computer and want to check signal levels in the same sitting. The tool runs on the gateway itself, so a dead internet connection does not block it.
- Get a computer onto the gateway's network, by Ethernet if you can.
- Type http://10.0.0.1 into the address bar. A certificate warning is normal on a local device; click through it.
- Sign in. The username is admin. The password is whatever you set; see the caveat below before assuming it is the default.
- Open Troubleshooting in the sidebar, then Reset / Restore Gateway.
- Select the restart option (not Restore Factory Settings, which sits beside it) and confirm.
The Admin Password Is Not Always "password" Anymore
Older gateways shipped with admin/password as the default pair, and plenty still accept it. But Comcast has been steering account management into the app, and subscribers have reported 10.0.0.1 returning a page that simply tells them to download the app instead of a login prompt. On newer setups, the admin password is one you create through the Xfinity app, and web access may need to be enabled there first. If it doesn't accept the default username and password, that is the likely reason, not a broken gateway, and not a reason to reach for the reset pinhole.
Bridge Mode Changes the Rules
With bridge mode on, the gateway stops routing, and your own router assigns addresses. Therefore, the admin panel at 10.0.0.1 is unreachable from anything sitting behind that personal router. To get back in, run an Ethernet cable from a laptop straight into the gateway, bypassing your router entirely, and set the laptop to obtain an address automatically. Then load 10.0.0.1 as usual. xFi Pods Have to Go Second
Pods are mesh nodes with no power switch and are controlled by the gateway. Reboot them out of sequence, and they spend several minutes hunting for a parent that is not up yet.
- Reboot the gateway using whichever of the three methods suits you.
- Wait for steady white.
- Unplug each Pod, count 30 seconds, and plug them back in.
- Allow about 5 minutes per Pod to rejoin the mesh. A blinking white Pod is still negotiating; a steady one has landed.
If a Pod stays offline after that, the Xfinity app can run a health and placement check on it individually, which is usually more informative than another power cycle. And after a factory reset, Pods need to be paired to the gateway again from scratch. They do not reattach on their own.
Still Broken After a Reboot?
The Light Settles on Red
Red means the gateway has power and no usable path to Comcast. Start with the coax: it should thread on finger-tight at the gateway and again at the wall plate, with no play in the connector. Splitters are the next suspect; they draw down signal and can affect overall performance. Bypass any splitter temporarily and see whether the light changes. Then use the Xfinity app to confirm it's not due to an outage. Red can also mean the unit is running hot, so check that it is not crammed into a cabinet with no airflow.
