If Kinetic and Spectrum are both available at your address, you'll be choosing between fiber internet and cable internet. Kinetic (formerly Kinetic by Windstream) sells fiber plans from $19.99 to $79.99 a month with price guarantees of up to three years. Spectrum offers cable internet from $30 a month for the first year, with multi-gig plans in select areas of its 45-state service area. But Spectrum also offers fiber internet in very select markets, with speeds up to 7 Gbps (7,000 Mbps).

This guide compares Kinetic and Spectrum on price, speed, fees, availability, and perks so you can decide which best fits your household needs.

The Quick Answer: Is Kinetic Better Than Spectrum?

Kinetic fiber is the better value if it reaches your address. Kinetic Fiber 1 Gig costs $39.99/mo. with AutoPay, compared with $60/mo. for Spectrum Internet 1 Gig, and fiber delivers much faster uploads than cable.

Spectrum is the better choice if you want speeds above 2 Gbps (Spectrum offers up to 7 Gbps over fiber in select areas), if Kinetic only offers DSL or isn't available at all, or if you want a free year of Spectrum Mobile.

  • Lowest entry price: Kinetic Fiber 100 at $19.99/mo. with AutoPay (select markets) vs. Spectrum Internet 100 at $30/mo. for one year.
  • Best gigabit value: Kinetic Fiber 1 Gig at $39.99/mo. vs. Spectrum Internet 1 Gig at $60/mo.
  • Fastest top speed: Spectrum, up to 7 Gig in select areas. Kinetic tops out at 2 Gig.
  • Longest price lock: Kinetic, with guarantees of one to three years depending on the plan. Spectrum's promo prices last one year.
  • Widest availability: Spectrum, in 45 states. Kinetic serves 18 states.

Are Kinetic, Windstream, and Spectrum the Same Company?

No, Kinetic and Spectrum are separate, competing providers. Kinetic is the residential internet brand of Windstream, which merged with Uniti on August 1, 2025. Uniti now runs Kinetic as one of its brands, so you may still see "Windstream" on older bills and websites.

Spectrum is the brand of Charter Communications. Charter completed its acquisition of Cox Communications on August 20, 2026, and now offers Spectrum service in 45 states to more than 70 million homes and businesses. Former Cox markets are moving to the Spectrum brand, and Charter plans to rename its parent company Cox Communications about a year after closing.

To make matters even more interesting: Kinetic partners with AT&T, not Spectrum, for wireless. AT&T wireless customers can save on Kinetic internet (details below).

Which Is Cheaper, Kinetic or Spectrum?

With each provider's Wi-Fi equipment included, Kinetic costs about $9 less per month at every matching speed. Kinetic charges $10.99/mo. for its Wi-Fi gateway, while Spectrum includes a free modem and bundles Wi-Fi into its faster plans. Here's how monthly costs compare with each provider's Wi-Fi equipment:

Speed tier Kinetic (plan + gateway) Spectrum (plan + Wi-Fi) First-year difference
100 Mbps $30.98/mo. $40/mo. ($30 plan + $10 Advanced WiFi) Kinetic saves about $108
1 Gig $50.98/mo. $60/mo. (Wi-Fi included) Kinetic saves about $108
2 Gig $70.98/mo. $80/mo. (Wi-Fi included) Kinetic saves about $108

Estimated from the published prices above, before taxes and fees. Kinetic 100 Mbps pricing is available in select markets and does require AutoPay. Spectrum customers who use their own router can skip the Advanced WiFi fee on the 100 Mbps plan.

The two become more distinct after year one. Kinetic locks in its 2 Gig price for two years and its Fiber Max 2 Gig price for three, while Spectrum's promo prices end after 12 months. AT&T wireless customers can also take $20/mo. off Kinetic plans of 300 Mbps and up for up to 24 months. (Are there other costs with fiber internet? Check out our guide to fiber internet prices.)

Speed: Kinetic Fiber vs. Spectrum Cable

When it comes to download speeds, the two are close for most households. Both sell 100 Mbps to 2 Gbps plans, and Spectrum offers its 7 Gig fiber plan in select areas. The more useful difference is upload speed.

If you upload a lot (large file transfers, livestreaming, cloud syncs, etc.), compare upload speeds before you compare prices. You can check what you're getting now by running an internet speed test at TestMySpeed.

Kinetic DSL vs. Spectrum Cable

Kinetic still sells DSL over copper phone lines in areas without Kinetic fiber, at $44.99/mo. for the first year with AutoPay. If DSL is your only Kinetic option, Spectrum is usually the better choice: Spectrum Internet 100 costs less ($30/mo. for the first year) and cable is generally much faster than DSL. Kinetic also charges $100 for professional installation to self-install-eligible customers on copper lines.

If Spectrum is not available to you, there may be better options than DSL. Use your ZIP code to see what internet providers are in your area. If there's a 5G home internet provider or a fixed wireless internet provider in your area, they may be a better solution than DSL.

Availability: Where Can You Get Kinetic and Spectrum?

Kinetic offers residential service in 18 states. Fiber is available in parts of that footprint, with DSL being more widely available within Kinetic service areas.

Spectrum is available in 45 states after its Cox acquisition, reaching more than 70 million homes and businesses. Spectrum fiber has very limited availability in some of the states where it operates.

Where they overlap: Both providers serve parts of Kentucky, North Carolina, Ohio, Texas, and New York, among other states. Because Kinetic may offer fiber on one street and DSL on the next, check which providers and connection types serve your address.
