Low Earth orbit satellite technology delivers lower latency than traditional satellite internet, with download speeds typically ranging from 25 to 220 Mbps. No long-term contracts on residential plans, easy self-installation with guided setup through the Starlink app, and coverage available virtually anywhere with a clear view of the sky — including rural and remote areas underserved by cable and fiber providers.
Starlink has earned widespread recognition for bringing high-speed internet to underserved communities and advancing satellite technology.
Starlink is a satellite internet service operated by SpaceX, the aerospace company founded by Elon Musk and headquartered in Hawthorne, California. Launched commercially in 2020 following a public beta, Starlink has rapidly grown to serve over 4 million subscribers across more than 100 countries. Unlike traditional geostationary satellite providers, Starlink operates a constellation of thousands of low Earth orbit satellites, enabling significantly lower latency and faster speeds. Its primary mission is to deliver reliable broadband to rural, remote, and underserved communities where cable and fiber infrastructure is unavailable.
Starlink is a division of SpaceX, launched commercially in 2020 after a successful public beta program. It provides high-speed, low-latency broadband internet via a growing constellation of low Earth orbit satellites. With over 6,000 satellites in orbit and millions of active subscribers worldwide, Starlink has become the world's largest satellite internet provider by subscriber count.
Starlink's core mission is bridging the digital divide by connecting homes, businesses, schools, and critical infrastructure in locations that traditional wired internet cannot reach. From remote farms in the American West to villages across Africa and South America, Starlink has made reliable broadband accessible to communities that previously had none.

To get started, you need the Starlink Kit, which includes a phased-array satellite dish (Starlink terminal), a Wi-Fi router, mounting hardware, and all necessary cables. The kit is available for a one-time hardware purchase. Once delivered, most customers can complete setup in under 30 minutes using the Starlink app to guide dish placement and activation.
Standard Starlink Residential plans do not have hard data caps; however, after consuming a specified amount of Priority data, your traffic may be deprioritized during times of network congestion. Starlink Priority and Business plans offer dedicated high-priority data allocations, and additional priority data can be purchased if needed.
Starlink Residential customers typically experience download speeds between 25 and 400 Mbps and upload speeds between 5 and 35 Mbps, with latency of 25–60 ms. Speeds may vary based on your location, time of day, and local network congestion. Starlink Business and Priority plans offer faster speeds and dedicated priority access for more demanding use cases.
Starlink is available across all 50 U.S. states and in over 100 countries worldwide. Coverage is determined by satellite capacity in your area, and some locations may have a waitlist depending on demand. You can check availability and join the waitlist by entering your address on the Starlink website.
Yes. Starlink offers a Roam plan (formerly Portability) that lets you use your dish at any location within your coverage region — perfect for RVs, cabins, or frequent travel. Starlink Maritime and Aviation plans are also available for use on boats and aircraft. Note that using a standard Residential plan outside your registered service address may result in deprioritized speeds.
Starlink residential and roam plans are month-to-month with no long-term contracts required. Hardware (dish, router, and mounting kit) is a separate one-time purchase and is not included in the monthly service fee. Service is subject to Starlink's Fair Use and Acceptable Use policies, which may result in speed deprioritization after priority data thresholds are reached during periods of network congestion. Availability, speeds, and pricing are subject to change. Refer to the Starlink Terms of Service for full details.
